How to buy a used hydrovac or vacuum truck

A vacuum truck is a chassis, a blower, a pump and a tank that all age at different rates, and the asking price rarely tells you which one is about to cost you money. This guide covers what the numbers mean, what to inspect, what fails, what it costs and what paperwork has to come with it.

Which type of vac truck do you actually need?

The right machine is decided by what you are moving, not by how much vacuum it has. Hydrovacs excavate soil with pressurized water; vacuum trucks haul liquid and sludge; combination sewer trucks do both jetting and vacuuming in a pipe; air excavators dig without water so the spoil can go back in the hole.

Buyers get this wrong in one specific direction: they buy a hydrovac when the work is liquid haulage, then discover they are carrying a water tank, a boiler and a boom they never use, on a chassis rated for weight they are not hauling. Start from the job.

What do vac truck specifications actually mean?

Six numbers decide what a vacuum truck can do: debris tank capacity in cubic yards, fresh water capacity in gallons, blower airflow in CFM, vacuum in inches of mercury, water pump flow and pressure in GPM and PSI, and boom reach in feet. Everything else on a spec sheet is a consequence of those six.

Debris tank capacity (cubic yards)
How much spoil the truck holds before it has to drive to a dump site. Around 12 cubic yards is the common utility and daylighting spec; 8–10 suits urban work with a close dump; 15 and up pays for itself on pipeline jobs where the nearest disposal is an hour away. Ask for the usable capacity, not the shell volume — they differ once you account for the deflector and the screen.
Fresh water capacity (US gallons)
How long the crew digs before refilling. 1,300 gallons paired with a 12 cubic yard debris tank is the standard balance; going bigger on water without going bigger on debris just means you fill the debris tank first. Check whether the quoted figure is the total or the usable volume above the pump pickup.
Blower airflow (CFM) and vacuum (in Hg)
Airflow moves material along the hose; vacuum lifts it. A positive displacement blower in the 3,600–5,000 CFM range at up to 27 in Hg is the standard hydrovac setup, and it is what you want for deep digs and long hose runs. Fan systems move more air at much lower vacuum (typically 16–18 in Hg) and are common on combination sewer trucks, where volume of light debris matters more than lift.
Water pump flow (GPM) and pressure (PSI)
Hydrovac excavation pumps typically run 10–20 GPM at 2,000–3,000 PSI — enough to cut soil without damaging a buried line. Combination sewer jetters are a different animal: 60–80 GPM at 2,000–2,500 PSI, because the job is scouring a pipe wall rather than cutting a hole. A pump quoted at high PSI and low GPM will disappoint on clay.
Boom reach, rotation and hose diameter
Boom reach of 20–27 feet with 270–335 degrees of rotation covers most work from a single truck setup. An 8-inch hose is standard; 6-inch is easier to handle but chokes on cobble. Reach matters more than it sounds: every foot the boom cannot reach is a truck reposition, and repositioning in traffic is where the day disappears.
Chassis rating, axles and GVWR
A tandem (6x4) chassis carries most 10–12 cubic yard units; larger debris tanks push you to a tri-drive (8x6) to stay legal when the tank is full. GVWR of 66,000–80,000 lb is typical. Weight law is the real constraint here, especially in Canada — a truck that is legal loaded in one province may not be in the next.
Cold-weather package
A boiler or heat exchanger (commonly 300,000–500,000 BTU), heated cabinets, insulated water tank and full drain-down capability. North of the frost line this is not an option, it is the difference between working in February and parking. A unit sold without it in a cold market is priced accordingly, and retrofitting costs far more than paying for it up front.

How do engine hours and mileage affect value?

A vac truck ages on two clocks. Chassis mileage tells you about the truck; auxiliary engine or blower hours tell you about the machine — and on a working hydrovac the auxiliary hours matter far more. Treat whichever number is worse as the truck’s real age.

A hydrovac spends most of its life stationary with the auxiliary engine at working RPM. That is why a unit can show 120,000 easy highway miles and 9,000 hard pump hours: the odometer describes the commute, not the work. One hour at load is worth roughly 30–50 highway miles of wear, so a truck with 8,000 auxiliary hours has done somewhere between 240,000 and 400,000 miles of equivalent duty on everything downstream of the PTO.

The practical rule: a documented rebuild beats a low reading. A 7,000-hour truck with invoices for a blower rebuild at 6,200 hours and a pump overhaul at 5,000 is a better buy than a 4,000-hour truck whose owner cannot say who serviced it. Hour meters can be replaced and are not tamper-evident in the way an odometer is — always cross-check the reading against service records, tire and hose condition, and wear on the controls the operator touches every day.

  • Ask for both numbers in writing before you travel, and ask which engine each figure refers to.
  • Photograph the hour meter and the odometer at inspection; compare them to what the advert claimed.
  • On a chassis, a 2010-or-later engine matters for emissions compliance in several jurisdictions — see the compliance section below.
  • On a trailer unit there is no chassis clock at all, so the auxiliary hours and the tank condition are the whole story.

What should a used hydrovac or vacuum truck cost?

Used truck-mounted hydrovacs generally trade between roughly $75,000 and $500,000 in North America, with the spread driven by age, auxiliary hours, tank capacity and whether the unit is winterized. New truck-mounted units commonly land between $450,000 and $750,000 depending on chassis and configuration.

What actually moves a price inside those bands

Two identical model-year trucks can be $120,000 apart, and it is almost never the paint. In descending order of impact:

  • Auxiliary engine hours and documented rebuild history — the single biggest lever.
  • Debris and water capacity, because it sets how much revenue work the truck can do between dumps.
  • A working cold-weather package, in any market with a real winter.
  • Current tank certification and a clean annual inspection, which the buyer otherwise inherits as a bill.
  • Chassis emissions equipment and its service history; a neglected aftertreatment system is a five-figure surprise.
  • Boom reach and hose diameter, which decide how many setups a day the crew needs.
  • Brand and local dealer support, which matter mainly for parts lead time rather than resale.

The honest way to price a specific machine is to compare it against what is on the market this week, not against a published average. Filter live listings to the same type, a similar year and a similar hour band, and read the three closest comparables end to end — including what they disclose and what they quietly leave out.

Who makes hydrovac and vacuum trucks?

The North American vacuum equipment market is built by a small number of manufacturers that fall into three groups: combination sewer cleaner builders (Vactor, Vac-Con, GapVax, Aquatech, Sewer Equipment), industrial vacuum loader builders (Guzzler, Super Products, Presvac), and vacuum excavation specialists (Truvac, X-Vac, Ditch Witch, Vermeer, and the Canadian cold-weather builders Foremost, Tornado and Rival). Which group you are shopping in matters more than which brand inside it.

Brands overlap less than the spec sheets suggest. A municipal combination truck and a hydro excavator share a blower and a debris tank and almost nothing else, and the companies that are genuinely good at one are often not the ones you want for the other. Read the group first, then the brand, then the specific unit.

Corporate ownership matters here for exactly one reason: parts. Federal Signal, Alamo Group and Toro between them own a good share of the names below, and a brand that joined a large group usually ends up with a wider service network than it had alone. It rarely changes the machine you are inspecting.

Vactor
Streator, Illinois. Part of Federal Signal's Environmental Solutions Group.
Builds: Combination sewer cleaners, and the reference point every other combination unit gets compared against — the 2100 series is the long-running municipal workhorse. Vactor builds both fan and positive displacement machines, which suit different work. Federal Signal moved vacuum excavation to its Truvac brand in 2019, so a full-size Vactor-built hydro excavator may carry either badge depending on build year.
Parts and support: The widest parts and service coverage of any brand in this guide, in both the US and Canada, through Federal Signal service centers and a large dealer network. Parts lead time is rarely what goes wrong with a Vactor.
Check on a used one: Establish whether it is a fan or a positive displacement machine before anything else, because it decides what the truck is good at and a listing often does not say. Then work the debris body hoist through full travel, check the rear door seal and locking gear under vacuum, and run the hose reel end to end.
Truvac
Streator, Illinois. Federal Signal's vacuum excavation brand, introduced in 2019.
Builds: Hydro excavators on the same platform as Vactor: the full-size HXX line plus the smaller Prodigy and Paradigm units aimed at utility and locate crews. Machines sold as Vactor HXX before the brand split are the same family.
Parts and support: Shares the Vactor parts and service network, which is the main practical argument for buying one over a smaller brand.
Check on a used one: Treat it as a Vactor. Blower hours and rebuild invoices first, then boom pivot and wear pad condition, then whether the water system was genuinely drained down every winter rather than just parked indoors.
Vac-Con
Green Cove Springs, Florida. A subsidiary of Holden Industries and employee-owned.
Builds: Combination sewer cleaners, industrial vacuum units and hydro excavators, built to order since 1986. The signature is a hydrostatic drive that can run the vacuum and water systems off the chassis engine, so single-engine builds are common; two-engine builds and both fan and positive displacement vacuum systems are also offered.
Parts and support: Strong municipal dealer coverage across the US and workable coverage in Canada. Parts normally come through the dealer rather than direct from the factory.
Check on a used one: On a single-engine unit the chassis engine did the excavating, so chassis engine hours matter as much as the odometer — ask for both and expect a gap. Then check the hydrostatic pumps and motors for leaks and for slow or drifting response under load.
GapVax
Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Family-owned and independent.
Builds: Combination sewer cleaners (the MC series), hydro excavators (the HV series) and industrial vacuum trucks, every one built to order. The reputation is for heavy structure and for building unusual configurations, and the combination units use a single unitized tank shell rather than separate water and debris tanks.
Parts and support: A smaller dealer network than Vactor or Vac-Con. Factory support out of Johnstown is direct and well regarded, but if the truck will be based in western Canada, find out who services it before you buy rather than after.
Check on a used one: Because they are built to order, no two are alike. Get the original build sheet from the factory using the serial number and check the machine in front of you against it. A GapVax specced for a refinery is a different truck from one specced for a city, and the listing photos will not tell you which one you are looking at.
Guzzler
Built in Alabama under Federal Signal's Environmental Solutions Group.
Builds: Industrial vacuum loaders — high-airflow machines for recovering heavy, dry and abrasive material in refineries, steel mills and process plants. This is not an excavation brand and not a sewer brand.
Parts and support: Federal Signal service centers, which also rent and repair them. Good coverage through US industrial corridors and thinner away from them.
Check on a used one: These live in abrasive service, so wear is the whole story. Check the tank interior and cyclone for wall thinning, the blower for scoring, and the filter house for holes. Ask what material it actually moved: a loader that spent its life on coke or catalyst is worn very differently from one on general plant cleanup.
Super Products
Mukwonago, Wisconsin. Part of Alamo Group since 2014.
Builds: Four distinct lines under one roof: Camel combination sewer cleaners, Mud Dog hydro excavators, Supersucker industrial vacuum loaders and Durasucker liquid vacuum trucks. Sellers almost always list the product name rather than the company name, so search on the line rather than on "Super Products".
Parts and support: Direct factory sales and service across the US plus a company-run rental network, which is why well-documented ex-rental units reach the used market. Canadian coverage is thinner than Vactor’s.
Check on a used one: Ask whether it came out of the company rental fleet. Ex-rental units usually come with real service records, which is a genuine advantage — but price them as machines that worked hard and were operated by a lot of different people.

Hi-Vac
Marietta, Ohio.
Builds: One company behind several brands a buyer meets separately: Aquatech combination sewer cleaners, X-Vac hydro and vacuum excavators, UltraVac industrial vacuum loaders and O’Brien jetters. Aquatech has built sewer cleaning equipment since the 1960s and was early to move the hose reel to the rear of the machine, now the common layout. Bodies run roughly 6 to 15 cubic yards across the combination and excavator lines.
Parts and support: Dealer-based across the US with selective Canadian coverage; factory parts come out of Marietta.
Check on a used one: On an Aquatech, run the rear hose reel through its full travel and inspect the reel drive and hose guide — it is the most-worked assembly on the machine and a rebuild is not cheap. On an X-Vac, apply the standard excavator checks: blower hours, boom pivot wear, door seal and winter drain-down history.

Sewer Equipment
Dixon, Illinois. A long-established builder that now covers several brands.
Builds: The corporate home of Ramvac hydro and air excavators, Mongoose jetters, the Sewer Equipment combination and easement machines, and Cappellotto units. Ramvac is the name most used units carry, and the line runs from small trailer units to tri-axle 15 cubic yard excavators, including air excavators.
Parts and support: Municipal dealer network across the US, lighter in Canada.
Check on a used one: Confirm whether you are looking at an air excavator or a hydro excavator, because listings often just say "Ramvac" and the two wear differently. On an air unit the compressor hours, the dry spoil path, the cyclone and the filtration are what matter — not a water pump and a boiler.
Also listed as: Ramvac, Mongoose
Ditch Witch
Perry, Oklahoma. Part of The Toro Company.
Builds: Vacuum excavators sold through the same dealers as its directional drills — the HX series of trailer and skid units for potholing, drilling fluid cleanup and small slot trenching, which replaced the older FX series. Full-size Ditch Witch-branded hydrovac trucks are built by Tornado in Alberta under an agreement that began in 2022; Toro then bought Tornado outright in December 2025.
Parts and support: The densest dealer coverage of any brand here, in both the US and Canada, because it rides on the Ditch Witch underground construction network. For most contractors that is the reason to buy one.
Check on a used one: Most used Ditch Witch vacs were bought as drill support and have been run on bentonite slurry, which cakes. Inspect the debris tank interior and the filter housing, check the water pump, and confirm the unit was drained before each winter. Ask for hours on the deck engine, which is the clock that matters on a trailer unit.
Vermeer
Pella, Iowa. Family-owned; the vacuum excavators come from its McLaughlin operation in South Carolina.
Builds: Trailer, skid and truck-mounted vacuum excavators sold alongside its directional drills, including a PTO-driven truck-mounted series. As with Ditch Witch, the vac is usually a support machine for a drilling crew rather than the basis of an excavation business.
Parts and support: A dense independent dealer network across the US and Canada. Parts availability is a genuine strength.
Check on a used one: Bentonite is what wears these out, so check the tank interior, the filtration and the vacuum blower. On a PTO-driven truck unit, confirm the PTO and driveline have been serviced, because that load runs through the transmission rather than a separate engine.
Foremost
Calgary, Alberta. The current hydrovac line dates to 2011.
Builds: Heavy-duty Canadian hydrovacs for oilfield, pipeline, utility and municipal work, in both code and non-code tank configurations. Foremost also builds off-road carriers and drilling equipment, and it shows in how the trucks are put together: heavy, insulated and specced for remote work.
Parts and support: Sold in Canada through Summit Truck Equipment and in the US through Transwest. Western Canadian support is strong; US coverage is real but concentrated.
Check on a used one: Establish whether the tank is code or non-code, because it decides what the truck may legally haul and it is not something you can add afterwards. Then run the boiler and the drain-down system rather than confirming they exist — these trucks work through Canadian winters, and a unit that was drained carelessly shows it in cracked pump housings and split lines.
Tornado
Alberta. Trades as Tornado Infrastructure Equipment and was acquired in December 2025 by The Toro Company, which also owns Ditch Witch.
Builds: Hydrovac trucks for cold-weather infrastructure, utility and oilfield work, with high-capacity debris tanks and heated water systems. Tornado also builds the Ditch Witch-branded hydrovac trucks, so those two badges cover closely related machines.
Parts and support: An established Alberta service base and a growing US presence. The Toro acquisition puts it inside the Ditch Witch dealer network, which should widen US parts access over time — but on an older unit, confirm parts availability before you commit rather than assuming it.
Check on a used one: Cold-weather hardware is the entire point of these trucks, so make the seller run it: fire the boiler, confirm the heated cabinets and enclosures are intact, and look for freeze damage through the water system. Then check the debris tank hoist and the door seal, because these units haul heavy wet spoil.
Rival
Canadian-built, sold through dealers in both Canada and the US.
Builds: Two models, both engineered around legal road weight rather than maximum tank size: the T7, a tandem carrying roughly 7 cubic yards of debris and about 800 gallons of water, and the larger T10 at roughly 10 cubic yards and about 1,200 gallons. The argument is that the truck can carry a full debris load and still be legal, which matters more than raw capacity on urban and utility work.
Parts and support: Sold in Canada through Summit Truck Equipment and in the US through Transwest and some Ditch Witch dealers. A smaller network than the legacy brands — check who services one near where the truck will be based.
Check on a used one: Weigh it, or get a recent scale ticket. Legal payload is the whole value proposition, so a unit that has been added to over its life — heavier boom, extra tooling, a different chassis spec — may no longer deliver the advantage you are paying for.
Transway
Hamilton, Ontario. A family-owned custom builder.
Builds: Custom-built vacuum tank trucks rather than a fixed model line: septic and liquid waste units, sewer trucks, water trucks and hydrovacs, each built to the original buyer’s specification. Used Transways therefore vary widely from one another.
Parts and support: Centered on Ontario. Support outside eastern Canada is limited, which is worth weighing if the truck will be based elsewhere.
Check on a used one: Because these are one-off builds, the pump, blower and tank on a given truck can come from any number of suppliers. Read the data plates on the vacuum pump and the tank themselves and price a rebuild against those makers, rather than assuming a standard parts list.
Presvac
Ontario.
Builds: Industrial and liquid vacuum equipment built around certified tanks — ASME, DOT 407/412 and TC 407/412, including dual-plated DOT/TC tanks that are legal on both sides of the border. The range covers liquid vacuum trucks, positive displacement and liquid ring wet/dry loaders, hydro excavators and vacuum pup trailers, in carbon steel and in 304 and 316 stainless.
Parts and support: Ontario factory support with dealer coverage into the US industrial market. For code tank paperwork the factory is the practical source.
Check on a used one: The tank certification is the asset. Get the current inspection and hydrotest paperwork, confirm the code plate matches what the seller claims, and confirm the tank material suits what you intend to haul — carbon steel will not do the same jobs as 316 stainless. An out-of-certification code tank is an expensive problem, not a discount.
Westech
Western Canada. Acquired by Federal Signal's Environmental Solutions Group in 2016.
Builds: Canadian-built mobile vacuum tanks and hydrovac units, with a long record in cold-weather and oilfield service.
Parts and support: Backed by Federal Signal’s Canadian service network, which is a real advantage over the independent Canadian builders.
Check on a used one: The cold-climate checks apply — boiler, heated enclosures, drain-down — plus tank condition, which on a unit that spent its life in oilfield service may have seen corrosive product.

How do you choose between vac truck brands?

Choose the brand last, not first. On a used vac truck the specific unit’s hours, rebuild history and tank certification move the price and the risk far more than the badge does. What the badge mainly decides is how quickly you get parts and how many people within a day’s drive can fix it. Work in this order:

  • Start from the equipment type and the tank rating the work requires. That alone eliminates most of the brands above, because an industrial loader builder and a hydro excavator builder are not competing for the same job.
  • Then ask who services that brand within a day’s drive of where the truck will be based. Parts lead time is the cost you actually feel, and it is the one thing brand reliably predicts.
  • Then compare specific machines on auxiliary hours, documented rebuilds and current tank certification.
  • Use brand as the tiebreaker between two comparable units, not as the first filter. A well-documented truck from a smaller builder beats a neglected one from a big name.
Brands buyers commonly cross-shop, and what actually separates them

North of the frost line the Canadian machines’ boiler, insulation and drain-down engineering is what you are paying for. South of it, that hardware is weight you haul and never use.
Ditch Witch vs VermeerClose to interchangeable on the vacuum excavator side. Both sell through their own drilling dealer networks, both are usually bought as drill support, and both wear out the same way on bentonite. Pick whichever dealer is closer — that is genuinely most of the difference.
Foremost vs RivalCapacity against legal payload. Foremost builds the heavy, remote-capable machine for oilfield and pipeline work; Rival engineers around carrying a full debris load at legal road weight, which is what matters on urban utility work where you get scaled.
Guzzler, Supersucker or Presvac vs any excavator brandNot a real cross-shop. These are industrial loaders and code-tank haulers, not digging machines. If the job is plant cleanup or moving regulated liquid, an excavation brand is the wrong shelf entirely — and if the job is daylighting a gas line, an industrial loader is.

What should you inspect on a used vac truck?

Inspect a used vac truck in six passes: chassis and driveline, the vacuum system, the water system, the boom and hydraulics, the tank and body, then the paperwork. Insist on seeing it run under real load — cracked seals, weak vacuum and overheating hydraulics are all invisible on a truck idling in a yard.

Chassis and driveline

This is the part a truck shop can price for you, and the part most likely to be neglected because it is not what earns the money.

  • Frame rails behind the cab and under the tank mounts: look for cracks, added plating and fresh undercoating hiding repairs.
  • Aftertreatment system — DPF, DEF and EGR. Ask for regeneration history and fault codes; a truck that lives at idle is hard on all three.
  • Suspension, king pins, brake chambers and drum or rotor life. A tri-drive carries weight the previous owner may have exceeded.
  • Tire age and matching, especially on lift axles that spend their life up.
  • Pull the fault codes yourself, or bring someone who can. A cleared dash is not a clean truck.

Vacuum system

The blower is the most expensive single component on the machine and the one most often sold "recently serviced" with nothing to show for it.

  • Ask for the rebuild date, hours at rebuild and the invoice. No invoice means assume no rebuild.
  • Listen at working RPM for rattle or a change in pitch under load; check for oil misting at the blower and drive.
