How to buy a used hydrovac or vacuum truck
A vacuum truck is a chassis, a blower, a pump and a tank that all age at different rates, and the asking price rarely tells you which one is about to cost you money. This guide covers what the numbers mean, what to inspect, what fails, what it costs and what paperwork has to come with it.

Which type of vac truck do you actually need?
The right machine is decided by what you are moving, not by how much vacuum it has. Hydrovacs excavate soil with pressurized water; vacuum trucks haul liquid and sludge; combination sewer trucks do both jetting and vacuuming in a pipe; air excavators dig without water so the spoil can go back in the hole.
Buyers get this wrong in one specific direction: they buy a hydrovac when the work is liquid haulage, then discover they are carrying a water tank, a boiler and a boom they never use, on a chassis rated for weight they are not hauling. Start from the job.

What do vac truck specifications actually mean?
Six numbers decide what a vacuum truck can do: debris tank capacity in cubic yards, fresh water capacity in gallons, blower airflow in CFM, vacuum in inches of mercury, water pump flow and pressure in GPM and PSI, and boom reach in feet. Everything else on a spec sheet is a consequence of those six.
- Debris tank capacity (cubic yards)
- How much spoil the truck holds before it has to drive to a dump site. Around 12 cubic yards is the common utility and daylighting spec; 8–10 suits urban work with a close dump; 15 and up pays for itself on pipeline jobs where the nearest disposal is an hour away. Ask for the usable capacity, not the shell volume — they differ once you account for the deflector and the screen.
- Fresh water capacity (US gallons)
- How long the crew digs before refilling. 1,300 gallons paired with a 12 cubic yard debris tank is the standard balance; going bigger on water without going bigger on debris just means you fill the debris tank first. Check whether the quoted figure is the total or the usable volume above the pump pickup.
- Blower airflow (CFM) and vacuum (in Hg)
- Airflow moves material along the hose; vacuum lifts it. A positive displacement blower in the 3,600–5,000 CFM range at up to 27 in Hg is the standard hydrovac setup, and it is what you want for deep digs and long hose runs. Fan systems move more air at much lower vacuum (typically 16–18 in Hg) and are common on combination sewer trucks, where volume of light debris matters more than lift.
- Water pump flow (GPM) and pressure (PSI)
- Hydrovac excavation pumps typically run 10–20 GPM at 2,000–3,000 PSI — enough to cut soil without damaging a buried line. Combination sewer jetters are a different animal: 60–80 GPM at 2,000–2,500 PSI, because the job is scouring a pipe wall rather than cutting a hole. A pump quoted at high PSI and low GPM will disappoint on clay.
- Boom reach, rotation and hose diameter
- Boom reach of 20–27 feet with 270–335 degrees of rotation covers most work from a single truck setup. An 8-inch hose is standard; 6-inch is easier to handle but chokes on cobble. Reach matters more than it sounds: every foot the boom cannot reach is a truck reposition, and repositioning in traffic is where the day disappears.
- Chassis rating, axles and GVWR
- A tandem (6x4) chassis carries most 10–12 cubic yard units; larger debris tanks push you to a tri-drive (8x6) to stay legal when the tank is full. GVWR of 66,000–80,000 lb is typical. Weight law is the real constraint here, especially in Canada — a truck that is legal loaded in one province may not be in the next.
- Cold-weather package
- A boiler or heat exchanger (commonly 300,000–500,000 BTU), heated cabinets, insulated water tank and full drain-down capability. North of the frost line this is not an option, it is the difference between working in February and parking. A unit sold without it in a cold market is priced accordingly, and retrofitting costs far more than paying for it up front.
How do engine hours and mileage affect value?
A vac truck ages on two clocks. Chassis mileage tells you about the truck; auxiliary engine or blower hours tell you about the machine — and on a working hydrovac the auxiliary hours matter far more. Treat whichever number is worse as the truck’s real age.
A hydrovac spends most of its life stationary with the auxiliary engine at working RPM. That is why a unit can show 120,000 easy highway miles and 9,000 hard pump hours: the odometer describes the commute, not the work. One hour at load is worth roughly 30–50 highway miles of wear, so a truck with 8,000 auxiliary hours has done somewhere between 240,000 and 400,000 miles of equivalent duty on everything downstream of the PTO.

The practical rule: a documented rebuild beats a low reading. A 7,000-hour truck with invoices for a blower rebuild at 6,200 hours and a pump overhaul at 5,000 is a better buy than a 4,000-hour truck whose owner cannot say who serviced it. Hour meters can be replaced and are not tamper-evident in the way an odometer is — always cross-check the reading against service records, tire and hose condition, and wear on the controls the operator touches every day.
- Ask for both numbers in writing before you travel, and ask which engine each figure refers to.
- Photograph the hour meter and the odometer at inspection; compare them to what the advert claimed.
- On a chassis, a 2010-or-later engine matters for emissions compliance in several jurisdictions — see the compliance section below.
- On a trailer unit there is no chassis clock at all, so the auxiliary hours and the tank condition are the whole story.
What should a used hydrovac or vacuum truck cost?
Used truck-mounted hydrovacs generally trade between roughly $75,000 and $500,000 in North America, with the spread driven by age, auxiliary hours, tank capacity and whether the unit is winterized. New truck-mounted units commonly land between $450,000 and $750,000 depending on chassis and configuration.

What actually moves a price inside those bands
Two identical model-year trucks can be $120,000 apart, and it is almost never the paint. In descending order of impact:
- Auxiliary engine hours and documented rebuild history — the single biggest lever.
- Debris and water capacity, because it sets how much revenue work the truck can do between dumps.
- A working cold-weather package, in any market with a real winter.
- Current tank certification and a clean annual inspection, which the buyer otherwise inherits as a bill.
- Chassis emissions equipment and its service history; a neglected aftertreatment system is a five-figure surprise.
- Boom reach and hose diameter, which decide how many setups a day the crew needs.
- Brand and local dealer support, which matter mainly for parts lead time rather than resale.
The honest way to price a specific machine is to compare it against what is on the market this week, not against a published average. Filter live listings to the same type, a similar year and a similar hour band, and read the three closest comparables end to end — including what they disclose and what they quietly leave out.
Who makes hydrovac and vacuum trucks?
The North American vacuum equipment market is built by a small number of manufacturers that fall into three groups: combination sewer cleaner builders (Vactor, Vac-Con, GapVax, Aquatech, Sewer Equipment), industrial vacuum loader builders (Guzzler, Super Products, Presvac), and vacuum excavation specialists (Truvac, X-Vac, Ditch Witch, Vermeer, and the Canadian cold-weather builders Foremost, Tornado and Rival). Which group you are shopping in matters more than which brand inside it.
Brands overlap less than the spec sheets suggest. A municipal combination truck and a hydro excavator share a blower and a debris tank and almost nothing else, and the companies that are genuinely good at one are often not the ones you want for the other. Read the group first, then the brand, then the specific unit.
Corporate ownership matters here for exactly one reason: parts. Federal Signal, Alamo Group and Toro between them own a good share of the names below, and a brand that joined a large group usually ends up with a wider service network than it had alone. It rarely changes the machine you are inspecting.
How do you choose between vac truck brands?
Choose the brand last, not first. On a used vac truck the specific unit’s hours, rebuild history and tank certification move the price and the risk far more than the badge does. What the badge mainly decides is how quickly you get parts and how many people within a day’s drive can fix it. Work in this order:
- Start from the equipment type and the tank rating the work requires. That alone eliminates most of the brands above, because an industrial loader builder and a hydro excavator builder are not competing for the same job.
- Then ask who services that brand within a day’s drive of where the truck will be based. Parts lead time is the cost you actually feel, and it is the one thing brand reliably predicts.
- Then compare specific machines on auxiliary hours, documented rebuilds and current tank certification.
- Use brand as the tiebreaker between two comparable units, not as the first filter. A well-documented truck from a smaller builder beats a neglected one from a big name.

What should you inspect on a used vac truck?
Inspect a used vac truck in six passes: chassis and driveline, the vacuum system, the water system, the boom and hydraulics, the tank and body, then the paperwork. Insist on seeing it run under real load — cracked seals, weak vacuum and overheating hydraulics are all invisible on a truck idling in a yard.
Chassis and driveline
This is the part a truck shop can price for you, and the part most likely to be neglected because it is not what earns the money.
- Frame rails behind the cab and under the tank mounts: look for cracks, added plating and fresh undercoating hiding repairs.
- Aftertreatment system — DPF, DEF and EGR. Ask for regeneration history and fault codes; a truck that lives at idle is hard on all three.
- Suspension, king pins, brake chambers and drum or rotor life. A tri-drive carries weight the previous owner may have exceeded.
- Tire age and matching, especially on lift axles that spend their life up.
- Pull the fault codes yourself, or bring someone who can. A cleared dash is not a clean truck.
Vacuum system
The blower is the most expensive single component on the machine and the one most often sold "recently serviced" with nothing to show for it.
- Ask for the rebuild date, hours at rebuild and the invoice. No invoice means assume no rebuild.
- Listen at working RPM for rattle or a change in pitch under load; check for oil misting at the blower and drive.
- Read vacuum at the boom, not at the gauge on the tank, and confirm it holds while material is moving.
- Inspect cyclones and the filter housing for wear-through — abrasive spoil eats these from the inside.
- Check the vacuum relief valve actually lifts, and that the float shutoff seats.
Water system
Cheaper to fix than the blower, but a failed water system stops the truck just as completely.
- Run the pump to full working pressure and watch the gauge for pulsing, which points at worn valves or packing.
- Check hoses, wand and quick-connects for bulging and heat damage at the crimps.
- On a winterized unit, fire the boiler or heat exchanger and confirm it reaches temperature — do not accept "it worked last season".
- Confirm the drain-down system is complete. A truck that cannot be fully drained will crack something the first hard night.
- Check the fresh water tank internally for scale, sediment and baffle damage.
Boom, hydraulics and controls
The boom is the part the operator uses every minute of every dig, so wear here is both expensive and honest about how the truck was used.
- Rotate the boom through its full arc and listen to the rotation bearing and gearbox; play here is a five-figure repair.
- Cycle every hydraulic function and watch for drift, which means internal leakage in a cylinder or valve.
- Feel the hydraulic tank temperature after 30 minutes of work — running hot points at a tired pump or a blocked cooler.
- Check hose routing for chafe points and look for recent hose replacements clustered in one area, which usually marks a chronic rub.
- Test the remote and every emergency stop. Worn control decals and a polished joystick are a decent proxy for real hours.
Debris tank and body
Tank condition is where the largest unpleasant surprises live, because most of it is out of sight until the door is open.
- Open the rear door and inspect the interior for pitting, thinning and weld repairs; bring a light and look at the bottom third.
- Check the door seal and the locking mechanism — a door that does not seal will not hold vacuum, however good the blower is.
- Cycle the hoist through a full dump and watch the cylinder, pins and hinges under load.
- Look at the sight glass, level indicators and the deflector plate for wash-through.
- On a code tank, confirm the plate matches the paperwork and the last test dates are current.
What fails on these machines, and what does it cost to fix?
The expensive failures on a vacuum truck cluster in six places: the blower, the water pump, the boom rotation assembly, the hydraulic pump, the debris tank and door, and — on the chassis — the emissions aftertreatment. Knowing the repair cost of each is what turns a walk-round into a negotiating position.

Use the table as arithmetic rather than as trivia. If a truck is $40,000 under the market for its year and hours, and the blower has no rebuild history at 9,000 hours, the discount is not a bargain — it is the repair, priced in, with the risk transferred to you. Conversely, a seller who can show a $16,000 blower invoice from last season has a genuine claim on a premium, and you should pay it.
What should you ask the seller before you travel?
Ask for the two clock readings, the rebuild history, the current tank certification and annual inspection, the reason for sale, and a video of the machine running under load. Those five answers eliminate most wasted trips, and how a seller handles them tells you as much as what they say.
- What are the chassis miles and the auxiliary engine hours today, and which engine does each figure refer to?
- When was the blower last rebuilt or exchanged, at how many hours, by whom, and can I see the invoice?
- When was the water pump last serviced, and has the unit ever suffered freeze damage?
- What is the current tank certification status, and when were the last external, internal and pressure tests?
- When did it last pass its annual DOT or CVIP inspection, and can I see the report?
- Is the title clean, is it in the seller’s name, and are there liens registered against the unit?
- What work has the truck been doing — utility potholing, pipeline, industrial, sewer — and how many hours a week?
- Why is it being sold, and is it being replaced with the same brand? A fleet replacing like with like is a good sign.
- Is the cold-weather package complete and working, and was the unit drained every winter?
- Can you send a video of it digging, showing the vacuum gauge and the water pressure gauge while material is moving?
- What is included — hoses, wands, tools, spare parts, remote — and what is being kept back?
- What is the lowest number that buys it today, subject to inspection?
Should you buy new or used?
Buy used when you need the machine working this quarter and can absorb a repair; buy new when lead time is acceptable, the configuration is unusual, or utilization is high enough that downtime costs more than the price difference. The break-even is utilization, not sentiment.

A middle path is worth naming: a low-hour unit two to four years old, bought from a fleet that runs a fixed replacement cycle. It has taken the depreciation hit, it has a full service history because the fleet needed one, and it is usually still inside the window where major components are original and healthy. That is where most of the good buying in this market happens.
How do buyers finance a vac truck?
Most used vacuum equipment is bought with equipment finance or a capital lease over 24 to 72 months, with 10–20% down on a used unit. Lenders underwrite the machine as collateral, so age, hours and whether the unit is titled matter as much as the borrower’s credit.
- Expect lenders to cap the age of used collateral, commonly around 10 years, and to ask for an appraisal on high-hour units.
- Titled chassis-mounted equipment finances more easily than a trailer or skid unit, because the lender can perfect a lien against the title.
- A lease with a fair-market-value buyout lowers the monthly payment; a $1 buyout is a purchase in all but name and prices accordingly.
- Get pre-approved before you inspect. A seller with two interested buyers takes the one who is funded, not the one who is hopeful.
- Budget insurance before you commit — vacuum equipment carries both auto liability and inland marine or equipment cover, and premiums surprise first-time buyers.
- If you are trading a unit in, get a separate written number for the trade so it cannot be used to blur the price of the machine you are buying.
What does it cost to get the truck home?
A road-legal, plated vacuum truck can usually be driven home for fuel, a driver and insurance. A non-running unit, a trailer-mounted system or an oversize configuration needs a heavy haul, which commonly runs $3 to $8 per mile plus permits — enough to change which listing is actually the cheapest.
- Confirm the unit is plated, insured and legal to drive before assuming you can drive it. An expired inspection can strand it at a scale.
- Empty the debris and water tanks before moving. Buyers have been caught paying to transport several tons of someone else’s spoil.
- Oversize or overweight configurations need state or provincial permits, and permit routing can add days as well as dollars.
- For a long haul, price both options: a hired driver for a drive-away is often cheaper than a lowboy for a running truck.
- Inspect at pickup and photograph everything. Damage that appears in transit is far easier to argue with dated photographs.
Buying across the US–Canada border
Cross-border purchases are routine in this market and entirely manageable, but they add steps that must be handled before the equipment moves, not after.
- Use a customs broker. The paperwork for commercial equipment is not a form you fill in at the booth.
- Confirm admissibility of the engine and emissions configuration in the destination country before you pay.
- Establish origin for duty purposes; much of this equipment qualifies for preferential treatment, but only with the right certification.
- Budget for currency movement and confirm which currency the price is quoted in — a five-figure swing is easy to overlook.
- Check the destination jurisdiction’s inspection regime; a unit that passed inspection where it lived may need work to pass where it is going.
What paperwork and compliance do you need to check?
Five documents decide whether a used vacuum truck can legally work: a clean title with no liens, a current annual DOT or CVIP inspection, current tank certification if the tank is a regulated cargo tank, an emissions-compliant engine for the jurisdiction it will operate in, and registration matching the configuration.
- Title, VIN and lien status
- Confirm the title is in the seller’s legal name, that the VIN on the title matches the plate on the chassis, and that the unit was never branded salvage or rebuilt. Run a UCC search in the US or a PPSA search in Canada against both the seller and the VIN.
- Annual vehicle inspection
- Commercial vehicles need a current annual inspection — the FMCSA annual inspection in the United States, a CVIP inspection in most of Canada. Ask for the most recent report, not just the sticker, and read what was written up.
- Cargo tank certification
- A tank that hauls regulated liquid — a DOT 407 or 412 code tank on an industrial vacuum truck, for example — carries a certification regime of external visual, internal visual, pressure and leakage tests on set intervals. A hydrovac debris tank is generally not a code cargo tank, but do not assume: check the data plate and ask what the unit is permitted to carry.
- Engine emissions compliance
- Engine model year governs where a truck may operate. California’s Truck and Bus regulation, in particular, requires 2010-or-newer engine emissions equivalence for most heavy trucks operating in the state, and other jurisdictions have their own rules. Confirm the engine year against where the truck will actually work before you buy.
- Registration, plating and operating authority
- Weight rating, axle configuration and intended use all affect registration. If the truck will cross state or provincial lines commercially, factor in IRP plating and IFTA fuel tax reporting.
- Waste handling permits
- What the truck may collect and where it may dump is regulated separately from the truck itself. Confirm the disposal route for the material you will actually be hauling before the machine arrives, because a truck with nowhere to dump is a parked truck.
How do you close the deal safely?
Close in a fixed order: agree the price subject to inspection, inspect, put the terms in a written bill of sale, verify banking details by voice on a number you sourced yourself, then pay. Equipment fraud in this market almost always targets the deposit, not the equipment.
- Agree a price in writing, explicitly subject to inspection and to a clear title search.
- Complete the inspection — ideally an independent one — and renegotiate on what it found rather than walking away over a fixable item.
- Confirm the seller is who they say they are. Check the business registration, the address and how long the phone number has existed.
- Run the lien search against the VIN or serial and the seller’s legal name, and get written confirmation that any existing lien will be discharged at closing.
- Use a written bill of sale naming the parties, the VIN or serial, hours and mileage at sale, exactly what is included, and the as-is or warranty terms.
